GPT-4o vs Claude 3.5 Sonnet: A No-BS Cost Comparison

SimplifAI Team

So, you're building something with an LLM. You've probably noticed the landscape is basically a two-horse race right now: OpenAI's GPT-4o and Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet. They're both ridiculously powerful, but they're not free. And if you're not careful, your monthly bill can get out of hand faster than a while(true) loop.

Let's cut the crap and talk about the only thing that really matters in the long run: the cost.

The Official Numbers (as of April 2026)

Model Input Cost / 1M tokens Output Cost / 1M tokens
OpenAI GPT-4o $2.50 $10.00
Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet $3.00 $15.00

Right off the bat, GPT-4o looks cheaper. $0.50 cheaper on input and $5.00 cheaper on output. That's 20% on input and 33% on output. But the raw price per token is only half the story.

Scenario 1: The RAG Pipeline

Input-heavy task. 100,000 tokens context per query, 1,000 output tokens, 10,000 queries/month.

GPT-4o: Input $2,500 + Output $100 = $2,600/mo
Claude 3.5: Input $3,000 + Output $150 = $3,150/mo

Winner: GPT-4o saves $550/month.

Scenario 2: The Chatbot / AI Agent

Output-heavy. 50,000 users, 20 conversations each, 5,000 input + 15,000 output tokens per conversation.

GPT-4o: $12,500 + $150,000 = $162,500/mo
Claude 3.5: $15,000 + $225,000 = $240,000/mo

Winner: GPT-4o by $77,500/month.

So GPT-4o is Always Cheaper?

On paper, yes. But:

  1. Performance: If Claude gives a perfect answer in one shot vs GPT-4o needing follow-ups, the effective cost may be lower.
  2. Tokenization: Models count tokens differently. Test your own data.
  3. Context Window: Claude has 200K vs GPT-4o's 128K. If you need 150K context, Claude is your only option.
  4. Future Pricing: These prices change constantly.

The Point

You can't just look at a pricing page. You have to measure in production. Track per-user, per-feature, per-API-call costs. This is exactly why we built LLMeter — per-customer cost attribution in real-time.

Don't guess. Instrument your app, measure everything, and make decisions based on your own data.
